Coming & Going

Name: Coming and Going

Medium: Oil paint and newspaper collage

Size: 40.6 cm x 50.8 cm

This piece was born out of a desire to express my feelings at this momentous turning point in my life: I am more than ready to embrace what the future holds but I’m also apprehensive. My life as I know it is about to change forever. This connects this to my theme of ‘Suppression and Release’. I will be free; I will grow and find out who I am. However freedom also means cutting ties and learning to stand alone. Research for this piece focused on the idea of liminality. I stand at a threshold and I must move across leaving one existence behind and beginning anew. The tunnel symbolically represents a passage from one phase of my life to another. As I make this transition I am in limbo or undefined. I am no longer what I was, but I have not yet reached what I will become. I am both myself and a new person; I’m afraid and excited, educated and ignorant, eager and hesitant. In this piece, I sought to capture the moment between. I am standing on the threshold, frozen in a state of suspension in the tunnel of time. ‘Coming and Going’, I am neither one thing nor the other, but somewhere in between.
